This short, longboard is built to ride smooth and fast in any sized wave. It's built mostly with leftover pieces from other Ventana surfboards. So, we've reclaimed our own pieces of reclaimed wood, as well!
The top deck is made from salvaged redwood from an Edwardian mansion built in San Francisco in 1907. The two, matching stringer pieces are flame maple from Meier Brothers Furniture. And, the dark wood down the center of the stringer is Doug fir from the hull of Western Flyer, considered by many to be the most famous fishing boat in the world. John Steinbeck, Ed "Doc" Ricketts, and crew sailed this 77-foot sardine boat into the Sea of Cortez in Baja California, Mexico in 1940. The following year, Steinbeck published his book, The Log from the Sea of Cortez, about the adventure. Learn more about this amazing boat and Ventana's use of its wood
The leash and vent plug are made using recycled skateboard decks in collaboration with Upcycled Skate Art.
The bottom deck is made from redwood floorboards from the Schwan mansion built in the late 1800s, salvaged black walnut from Mission Bell Reclaimed, Doug fir salvaged from the original Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, white oak and granadillo offcuts from Thamer Design & Woodwork, and reclaimed Doug fir from an unknown source. The nail holes in the redwood floorboards have been filled with crushed turquoise from a necklace donated to us by blue jeans maker Lucky Brand.
The glassed-on single fin is made of salvaged bay laurel from Joey Kochlacs, a Santa Cruz-based custom furniture maker. The center of the fin is filled with blue casting resin and is translucent.
The rails are made of cork which is more resistant to dings. There are two sheets of Aerialite 4 ounce fiberglass on top and two on bottom. The epoxy is Entropy Super Sap 100 bio-resin which is up to 40% tree sap and is very strong and light.
As with all Ventana Surfboards, the interior is glassed and sealed, as well.
This board is hollow, lightweight and will ride as great as it looks. Given the uniqueness of each side, it's two art pieces in one.
