The Willis Hodgepodge Flying Pig is a performance work of art custom made for one of our favorite customers, Chris Willis.

We incorporated a broad sampling of species and sources of reclaimed and salvaged woods from the Ventana Upcycle Partners. The wood-burned octopus featuring the cephalopod's nervous system was created by the talented Jessie Kendall-Bar.

Wood sources include:

  • Santa Cruz Guitar Company
  • Upcycled Skate Art
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium
  • Locus Surfboards
  • Tenbrook Archery
  • Mission Bell Reclaimed
  • Peter Gregg
  • Jeremiah Kille
  • Joey Kochlacs
  • Thamer Design
  • Meier Brothers Furniture

Reclaimed wood species include:

  • purple heart
  • Indian rosewood
  • spruce
  • padauk
  • Brazilian rosewood
  • black walnut
  • madrone
  • bloodwood
  • poplar
  • sapele
  • teak
  • mahogany
  • redwood
  • sycamore
  • Douglas fir
  • yellow cedar
  • aromatic cedar
  • maple
  • cherry
  • zebrawood
  • claro walnut
  • wenge
  • cocobolo
  • koa

The wooden “fish scales” single fin is made of reclaimed woods from Santa Cruz Guitar Company (koa, spruce, cocobolo, and Indian rosewood), Thamer Design (padauk), a salvaged hot tub (redwood), and the cooperage building on the UC Santa Cruz campus (bay laurel). There’s a bit of cherry from an unknown source, as well.

Western FlyerThe tail block with abalone inlay is made from a very special piece of Douglas fir from the hull of the Western Flyer, considered by many to be the most famous fishing boat in the world. John Steinbeck, Ed "Doc" Ricketts and crew sailed this 77-foot sardine boat into the Sea of Cortez in Baja California, Mexico in 1940. The following year, Steinbeck published his book, The Log from the Sea of Cortez, about the adventure. Learn more about this amazing boat and Ventana's use of its wood.

There is a brass inlay accenting the wooden racing stripe on top and bottom.

The rails are made of cork, and it was glassed with Entropy Super Sap Bio Resin and 4oz. fiberglass cloth (two layers on top and one on bottom) from Aerialite Surf. As with all Ventana boards, the interior is glassed and sealed, as well.

Sand and polish by Tyler Hopkins of Locus Surfboards.

Made in Santa Cruz, California by master artisan Martijn Stiphout.

Dimensions: 7’1” x 21.75" x 2.5"
